HEBES LE RENOUMES

A squire of Tristram's, sent to Tristram first by King Faramon's daughter, with a love letter and a gift brachet. After Faramon's daughter had died of love, Hebes returned to the great knight. He remained in Britain when Mark sent Tristram to Ireland to be cured of the wound from Marhaus' spear.

Hebes accompanied Gawaine, however, to Ireland for the tournament for the Lady of the Launds, hoping "to be made knight", and there recognized Tristram, promised not to reveal is true identity, and asked to receive knighthood from Tristram's hands.

Tristram obliged, after which Hebes "did right well that day" at the tournament and afterward held with Tristram. When the Irish queen, Isoud's mother, discovered Tristram was the man who had killed her brother Marhaus, it was Sir Hebes who bodily prevented her from slaying Tristram in his bath.

After Tristram's death, Hebes remained in Arthur's court as a companion of the Round Table, being listed among those who tried to heal Sir Urre. He accompanied the exiled Lancelot into France, where Lancelot made him Earl of Comange.
