PHARAMOND
Faramond

A legendary Frankish King who possibly has his origins in a similarly named historical ruler of the fifth century. In the Arthurian romances he appears as a freedman - that is, a slave who has been given his liberty - who seized the French throne, travelling in disguise to Arthur's court (Arthur was his enemy), but being discovered and expelled again. His daughter, Belide, fell in love with Tristan, but when he did not return her passion she died of a broken heart. This, however, did not prevent Pharamond from giving refuge to Tristan and Gorvenal after the death of Meliodas. The Italian romancer Ariosto says that Pharamond had a son, Clodion, who was defeated in combat by Tristan. Pharamond also appears in non-Arthurian romance, in particular one from the seventeenth century says that he fell in love with the daughter of the King of Cimbri, Rosamonde.
