In Arthur's day, wine was an uncommon beverage in England. This could explain how easy it seems to be to get a person to drink drugged wine.

The wine of Beaune, or Bayonne, France, must have been prized: "some men call it Bayonne, and some men call it Beaune, where the wine of Beaune is."
