YDER THE SON OF NUT [?]

Sir Yder was riding along one day with his damsel and his dwarf when they passed Queen Guenevere, her maiden, and Erec on their way to join Arthur's hunt for the White Stag. Yder allowed his dwarf to insult and strike first Guenevere's maiden and then Erec when they approached to invite the knight and lady to see the Queen.

After obtaining Guenevere's permission to pursue the strangers, Erec followed Yder to Lalut, where Erec met his future bride Enide and for the sake of her beauty fought Yder, defeated him, and sent him with his damsel and dwarf to Arthur's court to give himself up to the Queen and tell his story.

Yder had previously won the prize sparrow-hawk for his own damsel two years in a row, so either he was no mean champion or his damsel was so beautiful that nobody cared to challenge her right until the local maid Enide found a knight.

Guenenvere freed Yder at once on condition that he remain constantly at court, which he gladly did, becoming a member of the Queen's company.

Presumably, his dwarf and damsel stayed with him. His arms were blazoned gold and azure.

Yder the son of Nut can probably be identified with Malory's Ider, Idrus, or both.
